The way we present Easter, you would think Jesus was just sitting around wondering how he could show his love for us:
“I know how I can prove to them that I love them! I’ll die a painful and gruesome death for them! Does that sound good to you, God? Then they’ll be sure to love you! As a reward for loving you, you can let them in to an eternal paradise of perpetual joy and happiness!”
Jesus has nothing to prove. Jesus has something to reveal and something to establish. In the New Testament, he called it the Kingdom, and it consists entirely of Jesus and those who receive him. The purpose of the Kingdom: to serve as a dwelling for Almighty God.
Jesus loved us so much that he couldn’t stand the thought of us missing out on the Kingdom. He died so that we might be suitable living stones for his Father’s eternal, never-dying dwelling.
