I like a sparse desktop, and Ubuntu is perfectly suited to oblige. The panel in the lower left corner autohides when my mouse is away. Applets include Main Menu for launching apps and folders, Time and Date, Weather, Volume, Network Manager, CheckGmail, Rhythmbox, Glipper, and a hide/show desktop button. I use Gnome-Do to get to apps, files, and URLs quickly. It even posts to Twitter for me. Desktop background courtesy of Macindows at InterfaceLIFT.
